Large Cupped Daffodils
106 Cultivars Listed
Large Cupped is the largest demographic in daffodils, a completely man-made part of the genus where the majority of modern cultivars end up. It is a repository of beefy show daffodils, upright landscape varieties and everything else in between in all color combinations and all cup variations. A kind of a catch-all category. About a third of our list year to year is comprised of Large Cups.
Large Cups are defined as " One flower to a stem, corona (cup) more than one-third but less than equal to the length of the perianth segments (petals)."

An easy going monochromatic yellow coloration with a well-rounded perianth, Broadwalk Beauty is show daffodil that makes it easy to find a consistent and flawless bloom. Very small stock.

Often I wish there was a common term for large cupped daffs like this with a broad flat and bunched at the center corona. 2 W-Y
A stellar, but older, just-registered, bi-colored large cupped seedling from Brian Duncan. As for the name, "Hard to Beat" may be accurate: in Ireland may be a bit "cheeky", but in New York that's just plain old chutzpeh. Coming to a daffodil show near you soon.
Cross of Fiona Mc Killiop x Queen's Guard.

I have a favorite one... I Love You. That's one that I bred myself and it won first prize at the show in England. then it was still only numbers. 2 W-W
Love You More ! You Bethca ! A shapely and robust large cupped trumpet from Carlos van der Veek. Lovely ivory white color with fabulous substance. We list more miniature daffodils than pretty much anyone, and not a single one of those miniatures was conceived in the Netherlands. Our Dutch brethren bequeath upon us an impressive array of daffodils of great stature, bright color and breadth of bloom : here is another example of all that Lowland largesse. A very large, muy grande, and colorful, muy colorido, bloom on a landscape-grade stem. Muy Bien, very good! With a little gentle-fingered suppression of the ribby-ness and natural reflex in the perianth Muy Bien can be a competition contender. From Carlos van der Veek.

When tulips are fringed, their spiky rims denote them as a Crispin type . But daffodils don't have a cool term like "Crispy" to declare a prickly cup because they didn't need one, until now. Who knows if there are many prickly daffs in our future but Pretty Prickles will certainly be recognized as the first. A rounded white ivory perianth surrounds the mango-colored prickly cup. A strong grower, we previously listed as F129 , not registered.

Robustian is a well-named pink cup -he does sport an overall robust feeling and throws a bloom of great substance. We think that there is likely no-end to the depth of pink color you may coax from the cup if you can supply cool, cool Northern-Ireland-like nights while Robustian is in bud.

2 W-OOY
Ice Follies is one of the most common daffodils you will see along the roadside, long marketed as a white daffodil as with time its cup fades from yellow to white. Slim Whitman, named for the county singer of yore, is a sport of Ice Follies yet its frilly and broad cup retains it color in a chorus of yellow ochre, saffron and gold. Also endowed with an iron will Slim blooms and increases North to South, singing a sweet ballad in the vase or yodeling across the holler in a landscape installation. A timeless bloomer that deserves to be more widely planted.
2 Y-O
Smooth Criminal is some kind of hybridizer's triumph in the quest for round, smooth overlapping petals, and a crenelated yet symmetrical corona. A bloom of perfect balance and saturated color. So named as the bloom will likely steal the show I suppose. Sunproof, exhibition bench ready.
2 W-GWW
Snowboard is an all around consistent performer . An all-linen-white large cup, this is a hot-dogger daff in the pot, in the border or on the show bench. A bit shorter, it makes a nice cut stem filler. Broad ovate petals and a touch of green in the cup. The dude is a van der Veek seedling.
2 YYW-YPP
Labelled an intermediate and labelled a dwarf I dutifully planted Solera in the miniatures bed. And there it blooms every year like Baby Huey over-taxing the crib, a sixth grader towering over the principal. Makes lots of consistent blooms that develop a lovely color along with a flattened perianth. I see Solera often at shows as a dependable team player, especially in collections. It is more late than mid season blooming for us in Connecticut. From Brian Duncan.
2 W-GWP
An older Brian Duncan Pink ringed large cup, Songket is a little more prim and delicate than her father, the well named and well loved High Society who is no longer in our nursery . Songket is a close relative and a replacement candidate.
2 Y-Y

In a world of hyphenated family names Sun Bronze conventionally would be named "Runaway Cowboy". Kind of fitting I will keep that in mind if come across another blazing hotpoker red orange from Tasmania.
2 WWY-O
For no discernible reason it is unusual to see anyone in North Holland wearing a hat. Given the relentless wind and rain it is hard to fathom why, but my Dutch friend claims that he doesn't wear a hat because he doesn't want to go bald. But when the sun comes out in spring and falls on the Netherland's pates there is an outbreak of communal mass ecstasy. The baroque and unbounded joy expressed by the daffodil SunDazed is exemplary: A collision of ivory and mango frills and folds. Like any worthy landscape daffodil it blooms completely out of the leaves. By Carlos van der Veek. This daffodil is unregistered.
2 Y-O
A recent Brian Duncan introduction, a yellow / orange with a more cylindrical cup, for competition.
2 W-WWY

2 Y-O
Another muscular and bright trumpet shaped large cup from the van der Veeks, Sunny Sunday is strong on landscape positive attributes: upright, contrasty in color, sun proof, and blooms out of the leaves. 2 WWY-O
Here's a compact and sunny daffodil that we are always happy to meetup with in the Spring.. Tangerine Beauty, an intermediate, has a uniquely fruit colored cup . A breathy yellow color brushes across the well-formed white petals. Grows equally well in the North and the deep South. Good on all points.
1 W-Y
The Godfather easily produces the largest blooms of any daffodil in the family. Flowers are a full five inches across with a proportionately large softly-colored cup. Strong stemmed and long lasting The Godfather stands out like Gulliver among the Lilliputians. We are kind of proud to have it in our garden - we get to ask visitors if they would like to meet The Dom of Daffs. Recent van der Veek introduction.
2 W-W

Unbridled BTUs coming off this pugnacious pink large cupped from the van der Veek powerhouse. You can feel the color, but won't be able to describe it. One of the best things about floraculture ? It's solar powered. This daffodil is currently unregistered. 2023 Release.
2 W-P
An older, yet newly registered exhibition quality pink cup from Brian Duncan. Wasteland Pearl is reference to a Japanese kind of pearl jewelry, but some virtue may be lost in the translation. Smooth and orderly with rich color.
2 YYW-Y
In a previous incarnation we were not about soft colors, and abhorred even the suggestion of beige. But we fell hard for Wild Honeyon first sight; it throws tall, substantial, consistent and perfect blooms easily. Feels like a reverse bi-color, but is not classified as such. Incredibly long lasting through heat and wind, dare we say, a superior cultivar on many fronts.
2 W-O
Will Scarlet has been in the trade as long or longer than any other daffodil cultivar but we seldom see him around any more. Renown for his deep color and vigorous growth he was a commonly grown garden daffodil. Like many first generation crosses Billy boy is the product of two species daffodils : N. abscissus x N. radiiflorus var. poetarum. Being fertile both ways Will was bred a lot in his salad days, not so much lately to our knowledge. Tall and late, good for the border, sparse vista plantings, and cutting. ADS Historic.
2 Y-YOO
Some flowers are always shucking and jiving and waving in the wind, trying to get the attention of any passing pollinators : both the winged and the tweed-wearing types. Winks a bright intermediate from Badbury Rings doesn't have to do much more than, well.. give a wink. ADS Intermediate.
1 Y-YYO

2 Y-Y/O
