Split-Cupped Daffodils
16 Cultivars Listed
Split cups are a modern and man-made invention. The oldest split cup that you may find is Orangery dating from 1957, this is a relatively recent division and originally dominated by Dutch hybridizers. Split cups come in many colors and the cup can be in tangerine , primrose yellow, apricots, deep roses or in any combinations of these. As varied as they are in color splits can also vary in form : miniature, intermediate, nodding with short stems, or held aloft on tall stems to rival the finest of any landscape daffodil.
The division has two subdivisions, 11a being the more common "Collared" type and 11b being the "Papillon" type. Don't feel bad if you can't see the difference at first, it takes a while to see it. In the A division the lobes of the cup agree and line up with the petals, in B they are less involved with the cup and are set at a 15 degree angle to the petals.
You can find these funny-faced fellows almost anywhere in the spring : at a competitive daffodil show, in a container, along the walkway or in a bridal bouquet.

It's hard to fill a truck selling Boslowick, he is so perfect, so broad faced and calming that you only need one bloom to make your day. But please, take two bulbs, or three ! A very well ordered and well behaved split cup, with a profound color. A good grower for us, a perfect thing like most things Ron Scamp. See also Jabberwocky. Limited availability.

This remarkable and newly registered seedling from Mr Blom reliably throws two scapes: the primary flower is a very balanced and well formed split cup, the secondary bloom a large cup. Cup and Saucer is a unique dwarf with lovely fruit-sweet color. Sunproof. Show judges may need to be on the watch for this one.

Broad hexagonal white and peach split cup will put a hex on your garden bed. Kind of like dancing the tarantella, but for daffodils. Recent van der Veek introduction.

A cup so broad, pink, and unbroken that it eclipses the perianth behind it, Diversity is a poster child for showy split cupped daffodils. A good competitor on the bench, as our stocks increase I expect diversity to attract the attention of cut flower growers. Parent to the split cup Cosine.

Everyone wants a date with Jodi when they see her, few will get her number. If she looks delicate and retiring it is because she is. A delicate pink split cup from the Cupid's arrow of Brian Duncan. We have just a few to offer again this year. Limit two per order please.

Here's a split cup that is calm and confident : soft yellow and soft pink in a broad and orderly perianth and corona formation. A John Reed seedling, it is newly registered in 2026 but the seedling number suggests that it is a cross from 2001. A lovely whispering presence of a bloom.

When some one asks you to dance, you should always say yes. Especially if it is someone with a colorful and contrasty split-cupped face. With a face like that, oh the stories they can tell. Vigorous white and orange grower from van der Veek.

Pucker up for this unusual split cup. White with a wild and wavy lobed pink corona. Recent introduction from Carlos van der Veek.

Unlike many split cups Maria Pia's corona face is round, flat, and unfrilly. The overall design of Maria is enough to take a ribbon. If you can coax that deep red face out of her you will certainly take the class.

Alec Gray-bred daffodils dominate the commercial trade by sheer volume grown. Scores of acres of his highly successful, miniature tazetta Minnow are grown each year, mainly for pot culture. Minnowlet is a modern descendant of Minnow, being a small and neat monochromatic split cup. Two and a half inch flowers with concise Star of David petals, well designed collar. An ADS Intermediate.

Papaya King was a street front hot dog stand on 86th street in Manhattan (aka Nieuw Amsterdam) where a student, blue collar or office worker could get a dog and delicious tall Papaya drink for under a dollar. Though now defunct, the thirsty daffodil enthusiast can still get the same refreshing combination in yellow and papaya pink in this new introduction from North Holland. Collared split-cupped crowns held above broad upright leaves on substantial scapes Papaya King should quench multiple appetites : border, bench and vase.

From the cool sands of the Dutch surfside of the English Channel comes this baroque and lusty Yellow and Pink split cup. Some of our favorite Split cups look like they are exhausted at the end of the blooming day after trying to hold their fancy faces erect on wimpy stems. Peach on the Beach has stiff scapes that are well-matched to holding the intermediate blooms aloft.

A handsome new introduction, this split cup, Prom Queen is from Brian S. Duncan, a cross of Trigonometry x Diversity
